On His Own Terms

Wade Dickinson 2011

My father passed away suddenly this morning at home in San Francisco. He had been declining for the last year.  We were getting ready to move him closer to our home in Willow Glen but he did not want to go. Wade Dickinson died as he had lived, on his own terms and where he wanted to be. We have been putting together his obituary. Here is what we have so far:

Ben Wade Oakes Dickinson was born 29 October 1926 in Hickory Township (Sharon), Pennsylvania, to Ben Wade Orr Dickinson, Junior, and Gladys Grace Oakes Dickinson. Wade’s one sibling, Robert Wayne, was born eight years later. Wade and Wayne were creative inventing partners for fifty years, starting between seven and twenty-five companies together (depending on how you count) and being granted more than forty patents for a broad variety of technical inventions. Of his 39, Wade’s most recent patent was granted in 2011 (US Patent 7,914,749).

Wade attended Carnegie Institute of Technology, then United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, starting at the end of World War II and graduating in 1949. He studied as a nuclear physicist at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology, worked on the United States Air Force Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Program, and was a researcher at RAND Corporation, in Santa Monica, California. Wade was honorably discharged from the US Air Force with the rank of Captain. He joined Bechtel Corporation, during which time he was Technical Advisor on Atomic Energy to the US Congress. Wade and Wayne went into business in San Francisco, founding W.W. Dickinson Corporation, Agrophysics, Petrolphysics, and other businesses, applying their knowledge of physics and engineering to solve problems as varied as cardiology, cattle reproduction, and directional oil drilling.

Wade and Wayne and a team of other lecturers taught “Venture Design: The Start Up Company” (Engineering-110) for 19 years at the University of California at Berkeley. Wade was a Mason (West Point, New York, Lodge) for over 60 years. He was a founder and honorary Board member of the California Medical Clinic for Psychotherapy. Wade was a member of the parish of Saint Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church for over 50 years. At St.Mary’s, he served in several church leadership roles (Vestry, Treasurer) and was a dedicated crucifer and chalice bearer. Wade helped the parish to start community outreach ministries to support the hungry and homeless.

Wade married artist Eleanor Evelyn Vaughan Creekmore in 1952 with whom he had three children: Mark, Katy, and Peter. His grandchildren are: Jessica (and her husband Matthew) and Paul, Corey and Forrest, Lynda and Daniel. Wade died at the age of 85 on 16 November 2011 at his home in San Francisco, California.

Wade’s funeral will be held at Saint Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church in San Francisco, at 3 pm on Sunday, 4 December 2011, reception to follow at the church. If you plan to attend the funeral, please arrive early to allow extra time for parking.

Memorial donations are requested instead of flowers, to: Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin Community Outreach: 2325 Union St., San Francisco, CA 94123. Phone: 415-921-3665 (checks made out to: “St.Mary’s Community Outreach” and include “Donation in Memory of Wade Dickinson” on the memo line), or to the charity of your choice.

Goodbye Grandpa – we love you!

Hungry Koi

Expectant Koi fish

We saw Koi today in San Jose, California.  The large fish were so tame that they followed us expecting treats as we walked around their pond. The colors of the autumn leaves floating on the surface and the bright fish under the water were lovely.

TechWomen Mentors’ Party

TechWomen Mentors

The TechWomen mentors from the Silicon Valley are keeping in good communication with their mentees in the Middle East and North Africa. We have seen about a dozen new projects, including non-profits and business start-ups, initiated so far by our 37 talented and energetic colleagues since they returned to MENA from working with us here in California. Many of the mentors continue to serve as individual and group advisors, despite being half a world away.

One of the last official phases of the 2011 U.S. State Department’s mentoring program will happen next month when a few of us go to visit the technical women in Morocco for a week. We had hoped to go to Lebanon as well but regrettably that trip had to be cancelled.  Six of the mentees have recently won scholarships to return to the USA for a week to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, to be held 9-12 November 2011 in Portland, Oregon.  We look forward to seeing them there!

Yesterday in the hot autumn afternoon, 17 of the technical and cultural mentors met at my house in Willow Glen (San Jose, CA) for a potluck dinner, to catch up and enjoy each others’ company. Mentors from Huawei, Intel, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Likelist, NetApp, Northgate Environmental Management, SF Public Press, and Symantec and other companies and organizations brought lovely dishes to share. My son Paul took a picture of us on the steps of my backyard caboose (WP668).

Spiderweb Lunch in Los Gatos

Los Gatos spiderweb . Los Gatos spiderweb

The town of Los Gatos is full of cat pictures and puns. Many local businesses’ names refer to the mascot of the town (Los Gatos means “the cats” in Spanish). The original cats were the indigenous cougars. We live in San Jose but have been in Los Gatos frequently of late, visiting the talented Sumi’s Tailoring (for my daughter’s wedding dress), and eating lunch at the excellent California Cafe in the Old Town shopping area.

Waiting for lunch last week, I noticed a quiet neighbor: a spider had strung her web across the fence next to my chair. Spiderwebs are tricky to photograph. I was lucky to be there when the light was glinting from the delicate strands. Near the restaurant, we walked by a vintage car which had been parked under its cover long enough to have its rear tire become a trellis for a flowering weed.

Ladies’ Wedding Tea

Jessica's Wedding Tea

My daughter Jessica is getting married next week. We are mostly ready for the big event (125 guests). Yesterday, she and I went back to the tailor’s for another sash fitting, bought her two party dresses, and went to the florist. John and Paul went to the grocery store and the bakery.  Sinead (the Maid of Honor) and Jessica baked cookies when we got back.

Last night, we held the Ladies’ Tea for the senior women in Jessica’s life to celebrate. The gentlemen of the family were invited to go elsewhere.  The younger ladies are getting together for a bachelorette party next week.  All of the guests brought their favorite treats. We had cakes and cucumber sandwiches and rosemary bread and cornbread (with honey) and tarts and biscotti and lavender ice tea and hot teas and wine. The table decorations were the wishes tree, wedding favors, and love poems with ribbons to be given out at next week’s big event. My favorite was the almond cake with marzipan frosting in the shape of a gift box with a big bow (from Flower Flour bakery and florist here in Willow Glen, San Jose CA).

Tonight, the families of the Bride and Groom meeting for dinner and board games at our house – to check in and make final plans.  We usually play Settlers or Hearts.

San Jose Bike Party

San Jose Bike Party Santana Row

We had dinner at Pizza Antica at Santana Row before seeing the last Harry Potter movie yesterday. After the movie, we went to Pinkberry for dessert. Our quiet discussion of movie merits was interrupted by loud music and shouts of Bike Party! as the weekly San Jose Bike Party swept around the shopping area. Several thousand people of all ages on an impressive variety of bicycles and related people-powered vehicles, some with lights and others with sound systems, were clearly having a very good time in the warm summer evening.

Last Harry Potter Movie

Harry Potter 7 Century 22 San Jose . Harry Potter 7 Century 22 San Jose

I went with family and friends to see the last Harry Potter movie last night. It was dark and sad but with a marvelous battle at the end. My kids love J.K. Rowling’s books and have read each of the seven Harry Potter stories many times. My son listens to recordings of the stories regularly. For the last fourteen years, our whole family has awaited each book and movie eagerly. We have several copies of each book, some in more than one language. In 2003, when we took a family trip by Amtrak train from Chicago home to the San Francisco Bay Area, we had to share just two newly-arrived books among the four of us. I think I achieved a personal best by reading Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (870 pages) in a day and a half.  I am sorry to see the end of new stories about our favorite boy wizard.
