Flowers in Pipes for Easter

IMG_6234

I have been getting my garden in Willow Glen, California, ready for our annual children’s party – the great Easter Egg hunt this Sunday. We are also collecting goodies for our little guests, including stuffies, candies, and baskets.  Every child in the hunt picks a stuffed animal to be their personal advisor (since parents are not allowed to help), plus a basket for their eggs. Last year, we hosted over a dozen children searching for eggs on Easter morning.

Over the years, I have collected ceramic flue liners of many sizes – to use as planters. Some I inherited from my father’s garden. I have just planted two of these (plus an old steel pipe section) with red and yellow kangaroo paws, to go with the two I already have filled with pink geraniums. These tall planters create a new visual level (and keep the flowers away from our boy dog’s attentions). In the pictures, you can see the pipes against the background of WP668, our backyard caboose.  The new flowers will be a pretty background for the egg hunt.

TechWomen Mentors Lunch

IMG_5976 . IMG_5949

16 TechWomen 2011-2012 mentors (and potential-2013 mentors) gathered at my house in San Jose California last weekend for a potluck lunch and to hear Conference Chair Taghrid Samak tell us about EgyptNEGMA (Entrepreneurship for Development in Egypt – to be held next week at MIT).  One of our own TechWomen mentees, Heba Hosny, is an EgyptNEGMA-2013 finalist. My guests enjoyed the new porch and a tour of WP668 – the backyard caboose where I have my office.  Three had also been mentors in my SEED mentoring program at Sun Microsystems.  It was such a pleasure to be able to host this remarkably talented and energetic group of technical women!

Caboose Twinkle Lights

IMG_0675

Just in time for December, John put the twinkle lights around my caboose roof. WP668 is the 1916 caboose where I have my office. I have a fondness for twinkle lights, so John climbs up to the roof and gives me a fresh set for Christmas every year.

TechWomen Dinner at Home

IMG_4735

The Huawei TechWomen mentors and mentees gathered in my home for a potluck dinner tonight. My husband made a halal chicken curry with rice as the entree.  There were women from at least seven countries around our table: China, Egypt, India, Iran, Lebanon, Morocco, and the USA. The guests had fun visiting my office in WP668, our backyard caboose. The food was interesting, plentiful, and delicious. My mother and husband joined the party.  What a delightful group of new friends!

Renewed Stained Glass

I have written from time to time about the large and elegant stained glass panel created by my great grandfather, Walter Van Gilder. Today, it came home: re-leaded and refreshed by Vincent Taylor Architectural Art Glass. This summer, the panel will be installed in our dining room here in San Jose, California. Its previous homes were Knoxville, Tennessee (where it was made) and San Francisco.

Vince also spent time cleaning the large of the stained glass panel we commissioned ten years ago – it had gotten foggy on the inside.

WP668 Caboose and Cactus

IMG_9338

WP 6668, our backyard railroad caboose, sits in a garden of succulents and cactus. In fact, we measure the growth of our cactus by how high on the caboose they rise. The Silver Torch (Cleistocactus Strausii) with its obscene pink flowers, and the Black Spined Aloe are particularly vigorous growers. I am probably going to take out one of the aloes before it overwhelms its spiny neighbors. It can go live on the river bank where size does not matter.

Willow Glen – Historic Trains

IMG_9054

We live in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose, California. Willow Glen has a very strong Neighhorhood Association which works on “matters such as land use, planning, traffic, safety, open space, parks, and recreation.” Last week, the WGNA put on an event called “Historic Trains: How They Transformed San Jose”. As the proud owners of WP668, the 1916 railroad caboose in our backyard, of course John and I went to Willow Glen High School Library to learn about local history, economics, and railroads. The best part for me was when the speakers from the California Trolley and Railroad Corporation showed historic photos, followed by pictures of what those locations looked like today.
