Hillary Clinton in San Jose

Hillary Clinton and Gavin Newsom San Jose 26 May 2016

Hillary Clinton spoke in downtown San Jose, California, yesterday.  My husband John Plocher was able to go but I was stuck at the Superior Court – Hall of Justice for Jury Duty (the lawyers settled after an hour – so I was not even called out of the waiting room – sigh).

Secretary Clinton took quite a while to arrive on the stage but the audience of about a thousand got to hear from San Jose Vice Mayor Rose Herrera, City Councilwoman Magdalena Carrasco, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez, California State Assemblyman Evan Low, and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom before she spoke.

John took many pictures and recorded videos so that I could hear her impressive talk. Every time I hear her, I am more certain that Hillary Clinton is our best candidate for US President.  Her deep experience, insight, intelligence and excellent executive leadership skills are remarkable – especially in contrast to her political competition.

In yesterday’s crowd, a heckler stood near John and kept shouting insults so that no one else could hear. Instead of violence (as the news has increasingly reported of the Bernie Sanders campaign and also of the Donald Trump campaign), attendees at the Hillary Clinton rally started chanting “Hillary, Hillary, Hillary” every time the heckler spoke until he finally shut up.

San Jose calls itself The Capital of the Silicon Valley and is the 10th largest city in the USA – bigger than San Francisco but somehow always seeming smaller and less sophisticated.  Secretary Clinton yesterday called San Jose “a city that is all about the future” of the economy and our society. San Francisco and San Jose are about fifty miles apart, connected by two of the ten worst traffic areas in the USA. I was glad that Secretary Clinton came to visit us in San Jose and am so sorry I could not see her in person. On 8 July 2011, I got to hear her presentation to the inaugural group of TechWomen in Washington DC, but that is the closest I have come so far!

Silicon Valley Bethlehem and Cable Car

P1110946

We enjoy Christmas events old and new here in the Silicon Valley. Our EfM class went to the Bethlehem – Walk Through the Christmas Story together a week ago – followed by dinner at Mio Vicino in Santa Clara.   An unofficial highlight of the show was watching one of the flock headbutting all of the other sheep in turn while the shepherds and angel said their lines.

Last night a group of us current and former-Huawei staff got together for dinner (at Il Postale in Sunnyvale) followed by a motorized Cable Car Ride to see the holiday lights in Willow Glen.

Silicon Valley Lines Holiday Party

P1120035

John Plocher and I again hosted the Silicon Valley Lines Model Railroad Club holiday party at our home in Willow Glen last weekend. Highlights included visits to John’s N-scale layout (in our former garage), tours of WP668 (our backyard caboose), assembling a G-scale train route in the house, a potluck feast, playing with this year’s Conductor Duck party favor, and other delights of the season.

TechWomen’s Last Week in Silicon Valley

P1090574

This is the last week for the 78 TechWomen mentees visiting the Silicon Valley from Africa and the Middle East. Next week, they move to Washington DC for meetings with the US State Department, the TechWomen program sponsors. Some of us 106 mentors will be going with them! Last weekend, Larissa, Imen, and I and our families rode the annual Ghost Train at the Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, CA. We also joined the TechWomen farewell potluck picnic at Huddart Park in Woodside.  Imen joined our Shakespeare Reading Group, celebrating Halloween by reading Macbeth.

Today, Imen is giving her final technical presentation at Mozilla, the company which has generously hosted her this month. After our trip to the capitol, we will be sad to see Imen return home to Algeria.

China to Silicon Valley – by Truck

ups-tracker.infographic.18oct2013

My husband John Plocher contributes to many open source hardware and software products for model trail enthusiasts (aka “Train Nuts”). JMRI is an example of one of the software projects on which John has worked. One of his hardware projects is the DCC Brakeman – still on sale at The Train Shop (Santa Clara, CA). All of the schematics, PCB layouts, and technical details are on our family website: SPCoast – Electronics.

John frequently orders custom bits and pieces from China during development. In checking shipping status this morning on UPS, he was presented with the surprising image above. Note the icons:

  • Factory – in China
  • Home – in Silicon Valley
  • Truck – going between – across the Pacific Ocean

Silicon Valley Halloween

IMG_8020

Halloween is serious fun here in the Silicon Valley. Spooky house decorations go up weeks in advance, people come to church in funny hats and silly outfits (for “Boo Sunday”), companies have costume parties, waitresses work dressed as clowns, stores give out candy to kid parades, and tonight the sidewalks are full of children dressed as cats, bugs, princesses, super heros, and monsters walking from house to house trailed by their parents, greeting neighbors with “Trick or Treat!”.
