Notable Woman in Computing Duy-Loan Le

I was honored to talk with Duy-Loan Le in San Francisco yesterday about mentoring, and about the Notable Women in Computing playing card and poster project in which she is one of the 54 honorees. You can read updates about the ongoing “Notable Women” production on my daughter Jessica’s webpage and on our Kickstarter page.

Duy-Loan Le is a wise and very successful person and technical leader. I have heard her story several times in keynote speeches: her life and remarkable accomplishments are inspiring. Duy-Loan Le’s second edition card reads:

Senior Fellow-Texas Instruments, WITI Hall of Fame, ABI Women of Vision, Golden Torch Award for Exemplary Citizenship in the Vietnamese American community.
For contributions to Digital Signal Processor microelectronics technology, and as the 1st woman and 1st Asian TI Senior Fellow.

Recording TechWomen

During October, Everwise was pleased and honored to host two TechWomen Emerging Leaders: Mai Temraz (of Palestine) and Seham Al Jaafreh (of Jordan) in San Francisco. One of the projects we three worked on all month was making a series of videos about mentoring – featuring Seham and Mai speaking in Arabic. I have been processing the videos, adding music and animation. Six of the seven recordings are already posted on YouTube:

15 November update: Why Mentoring? (In Arabic), Featuring Seham Al Jaafreh, has now been posted – that is the whole initial video set!

These videos present mentoring in simple words, communicating to potential mentors and proteges. If you are interested in mentoring but do not understand exactly how it can work for your circumstances, this series is for you. Mentoring is new to many cultures, and not all languages even have a word for the practice.

In addition to these videos, Mai and I were audio-recorded by StoryCorps at the San Francisco Main Public Library. Also, a picture including Seham and me was featured on the TechWomen banner on display at the US State Department in Washington DC. It was a well-recorded month!

TechWomen in Washington DC

My TechWomen Emerging Leaders Seham Al Jaafreh (Jordan) and Mai Temraz (Palestine) did a great job on their final presentations to the Everwise teams – live in San Francisco, and calling in from New York and Minneapolis, on Thursday. Yesterday, we traveled to the nation’s capital, and today we start our meetings and tours in Washington D.C.

During our short month together, Mai passed two amateur radio operators exam levels (the first Palestinian woman to do so!), Seham won a big funding award then remotely managed her Mutah Knowledge Station team in Jordan to complete the follow up requirements, and together we created seven videos in Arabic about mentoring for Everwise, to be posted on YouTube. I am so proud of Mai and Seham!

World Series Parking

Tomorrow at 5 pm, the San Francisco Giants baseball team will play the first home game of the 2014 World Series a block from where I work at Everwise. Parking will be scarce and expensive. Normally costing between $10 to $15 per day, parking rates near the stadium will jump to between $90 to $200. I plan to take the train from San Jose tomorrow.

Two TechWomen at Everwise!

Today Everwise is pleased and honored to host an additional TechWomen Emerging Leader! Mai Temraz (of Palestine) has joined Seham Jaafreh (of Jordan) working at Everwise in San Francisco this month. CEO and Founder Mike Bergelson heard about Mai’s original mentor becoming very ill and immediately offered to host a second TechWomen mentoring program participant. The women of Everwise have welcomed our two new ladies. Everwise is a small company with a big heart! Seham and Mai are getting settled and starting on their professional projects today.

TechWomen Opening Day 2014!

Yesterday was the TechWomen 2014 opening event for participants from 16 countries in Africa and the Middle East (plus the USA!) – generously hosted by Juniper Networks again in Sunnyvale, California. During the next five weeks, I will be the Professional Mentor for Seham Jaafreh from Jordan – working together at Everwise In San Francisco. Lucy Keoni will also be working with Seham as her Cultural Mentor.

Assistant US Secretary of State Evan Ryan made the welcome announcement that the countries included in TechWomen 2015 will be extended to South Central Asia!
