TechWomen and Lions in Johannesburg, South Africa

IMG_6663

I arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, this morning.  I will spend the next week as part of the TechWomen Delegation – with senior technical mentors from the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley, Emerging Leaders from many of the 16 program countries in the Middle East and Africa, IIE staff, and staff from the US State Department, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Our first official meeting is tomorrow, so today a small group of us shopped at Nelson Mandela Square, then went to the Lion Park to see impressive wildlife, and pet some rowdy lion cubs.  A good start to an exciting adventure!

List: TechWomen Emerging Leader Cards from Africa and the Middle East

As of January 2015, these cards are available for sale on Notable Technical Women.

TechWomen-Card-Deck--First-Hand4

Yesterday, the selection committee picked 54 TechWomen Emerging Leaders to honor in a deck of playing cards.  TechWomen Emerging Leaders are selected annually from among thousands of applicants. They have participated from 16 countries in the Middle East and Africa since 2011 – coming to the San Francisco Bay Area to be mentored at Silicon Valley companies and universities in a prestigious STEM program. We received a very enthusiastic response by the TechWomen mentee alumnae community to our 15 December 2014 call for participation – unfortunately, more than could be included in a card deck of just 54. It was a hard decision for the selection committee to pick from among these remarkably talented women. We are pleased to be able to honor an impressive group from Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Palestine, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tunsia, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.  The selection committee members are:

Finance and Production:

We welcome financial backers! If you would like to join us in supporting this inspiring project, please contribute here. If we do not collect enough money to produce card decks in time for the TechWomen South Africa Delegation at the end of January 2015, we will prepare a poster featuring the cards to take to South Africa, then focus on getting funding for producing the playing cards to take on the Tunisia Delegation in mid-March 2015. The “TechWomen Emerging Leader” poster will be inspired by the “Notable Women in Computing” playing cards and poster project in content and design.  This project is a labor of love for the women behind it, which is why we are licensing it under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 U.S. License. We will make $0 profit from this project.

All 54 TechWomen Emerging Leader cards:

Here are the names and card assignments of the honorees. There may be text edits before production starts – space is very limited on playing cards! Jessica is creating the card and poster designs now – a sample card hand is above.

Art Trust

1975.Eleanor.portrait

My mother, Eleanor Creekmore Dickinson, has been an artist all of her life, including teaching for decades as the Professor of Life Drawing (and Gallery Management Program Director) at the renowned California College of the Arts (in Oakland and San Francisco). She has been creating in one medium or another pretty much daily since she knowingly composed her first photograph in 1941 at the age of ten. Even though she sells pieces regularly, this still makes for a huge collection of artwork – many thousands of framed and unframed works (mostly on paper or fabric). After my father Wade Dickinson passed away in 2011, we moved Eleanor and her art from San Francisco to San Jose.

For the last year, I have been working with my mother and brothers Pete and Mark, advised by an Estate CPA and an Estate Planning Attorney as well as experts in art, to set up a charitable Art Trust to maintain and manage my mother’s collection. Art is very complex in terms of taxes and valuation, and we want to get this business sorted out while our mother can be actively involved. I was very happy to finally get most of the Eleanor Dickinson Art Trust paperwork signed last week.

In addition to managing the business side of Eleanor Dickinson’s work, we also want her art to be exhibited – to be seen and enjoyed and not just kept in storage. However, even setting up a small local art show takes weeks of work for both the artist (or her family) and the gallery, museum, or exhibit space. Many shows require special framing, shipping, documentation, and insurance, all of which take time and money. We know from experience it can take many years of negotiations to donate an art collection to a museum or university. Within my mother’s larger collection, there are many sub-collections, including: Old Testament drawings, dream pictures, crucifixion velvets, animal portraits, plus drawings and photos and artifacts associated with Revival! and her other big traveling exhibits. We have set up the new Art Trust so that sales of art can pay the insurance and exhibit costs for the collection long-term.  We hope that our mother will be creating new art for many years to come.  We are doing our best to care for it!

What I will miss about my long commute

As of tomorrow, I am no longer commuting 1-1/2 hours each way over the fifty miles up the San Francisco peninsula from San Jose. San Francisco and San Jose have the negative distinction of being two of the top ten worst traffic areas in the USA. While I rejoice to have that part of my life back, surprisingly, I find that I will miss some aspects of the terrible commute.  I will miss…

Spending three hours every day with my husband. John is the Principle Architect in Seagate’s San Francisco office. We sometimes take CalTrain but mostly we drive together. Usually during the drive, I am reading aloud to John from Hillary Clinton’s Hard Choices, or from the Bible as part of my EfM homework, or interesting stories from the news of the day. IMG_4657

After Everwise

IMG_5308

Yesterday, my last day as Vice President – Mentoring at Everwise, was when the big storm hit, so the company holiday party was postponed. I handed out train ducks as presents to the two other people in the San Francisco office – and left extras with Veronica French for staff who could not get to work due to wild weather.

Some of the deliverables I am proudest of during my half year with Everwise:

On to new adventures!

TechWomen Delegation to South Africa – Preparations

IMG_5298

Last night was the potluck holiday party for TechWomen, the professional mentoring program for women in Africa and the Middle East, an initiative of the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. TechWomen is run by the San Francisco office of the Institute of International Education. Dozens of mentors from Silicon Valley companies arrived (despite dire storm warnings) to enjoy each other’s company, celebrate the promotion of Arezoo Miot to Director of TechWomen, admire the newly-remodeled IIE offices, and to start discussions for next month’s Delegation to South Africa.

We also celebrated our new alumnae: Heather Ramsey and Trish Tierney (former executives for IIE) who have a new non-profit startup called WAKE International (Women’s Alliance for Knowledge Exchange).

I am looking forward to planning my first trip to South Africa!

Mentoring in Arab Culture

IMG_3523

One of my motivations in working with Mai Temraz (of Palestine) and Seham Al Jaafreh (of Jordan) to create the Arabic Mentor-Protege video set by Everwise was to respond to discussions I had in the Middle East last year. As I wrote in my February 2013 blog entry “Honoring Our Own Generosity“, I was surprised and concerned to be twice told that in Arabic, that the saying is not “Give and Take” but “Take and Give”. Some doubted that mentoring would work in Arab culture. Yet, I have been treated with nothing but extraordinary generosity in my travels in the Middle East.  Also, in the last four years, I have seen the TechWomen Emerging Leaders from the Middle East thrive in that professional mentoring program.  I think that mentoring fits beautifully into the ancient Arab tradition of hospitality.

In October 2014 in San Francisco, Mai and Seham and I worked together to record the seven videos posted on my YouTube channel:

The seven videos are getting a small amount of attention and I hope that they will get more.  These videos present mentoring in simple words, communicating to potential mentors and proteges. If you are interested in mentoring but do not understand exactly how it can work for your circumstances, this series is for you. Mentoring is new to many cultures, and not all languages even have a word for the practice.
