John’s New Job with EVault

IMG_1994

This week, my husband John Plocher started his exciting new position as Principle Architect, Open Storage, at EVault, a wholly owned subsidiary of Seagate, the largest data storage company in the world. John now takes Caltrain’s Baby Bullet express train in the morning from San Jose to San Francisco – which gives him a walk and a train ride each day (both good things!). Unfortunately, at this time of year, he leaves for work in the dark and arrives home after dark.  We are still getting used to the new schedule and hope that there will be some work from home days in the future.

Merry Christmas

IMG_1379

Best wishes to you and your family for a happy holiday season, from all of us here in the Silicon Valley!

Between trying to get the construction workers finished enough to be out of our house by Christmas, and all of the usual holiday preparations and activities, December 2012 has been particularly busy. There has finally been sufficient progress on the new porch to allow us to have family and guests in the house.  The roof and final plastering were finished just before dinner yesterday – barely in time for us to go Christmas caroling on the cable car in San Francisco.  Jessica and Matthew were able to get off from work to join us for Christmas – for which we are very joyful!

  • I went shopping in Chinatown with Sally and Lorene (our tradition for over twenty years). We were sad to see the closed up Sam Wo restaurant where we used to eat raw fish salad for lunch during our annual walking tour of Grant Street stores.
  • John and I were delighted to hear our young friends Max and Beth perform as part of the Cantabile Youth Singers at the ornate St. Joseph Basilica in San Jose.
  • My son Paul and I picked out and walked home a Christmas tree – which sat in a bucket of water on the driveway for two weeks until the contractors left and we could move all of the furniture back.  Jessica and Matthew and Paul brought the tree inside and decorated it tonight.  The decorations are eclectic but cheerful.  I still need to put out the nativity figures John bought in Bethlehem.
  • My EfM class went to see the Bethlehem Christmas story re-enactment, and then went out to dinner together and exchanged gifts.
  • Last Sunday was the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church children’s pageant.
  • We have very much enjoyed Willow Glen’s enthusiastic Christmas light displays – which give every street its own twinkly charm as we go about our holiday business.
  • Today we went to the Dickens Fair at the Cow Palace in San Francisco to enjoy a Victorian Christmas, high tea, and last-minute shopping.
  • Tomorrow, John starts cooking for our Christmas feast on Tuesday!

TechWomen Farewell Party at Mozilla

IMG_5440

Yesterday was the TechWomen farewell party hosted by Mozilla in San Francisco.  Next week, we travel to the Grace Hopper Celebration and then the US State Department in Washington DC. We admired the stunning view of the Bay Bridge from the top of the Hills Brothers Coffee building, just a few blocks from where my father’s business was for many years. I grew up smelling the coffee roasting but had never been in this building before.

Before dinner, the mentors were each given a certificate of thanks signed by US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. We talked and danced and had a wonderful evening enjoying each other’s company. I even dressed up in a kaftan with matching veil.

Last TechWomen Day at Huawei

IMG_5270

Today was the last day at Huawei in Santa Clara for the three TechWomen mentees during their visit to the Silicon Valley.  There are still some San Francisco Bay Area events before they travel to the the Grace Hopper Celebration and then the US State Department in Washington DC next week.  The Huawei team held a lunch and gave each of our emerging leaders a certificate signed by Futurewei President, Guolin Wang, and by the TechWoman’s mentor or mentors.  I was also treated to a surprise birthday party this morning and Huawei held its annual Moon Cake and Chinese harvest festival party this afternoon.  A busy day!

San Francisco Bay Area Labyrinths

IMG_3486
California Pacific Medical Center – courtyard, Pacific Heights, Buchanan at Clay, San Francisco

Labyrinths are maze-like paths used for thousands of years in design and public structures. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, I have seen two types of public labyrinths: those inspired by the design on the floor of Chartres Cathedral (from around the year 1250) with 11 circuits and a distinct flower-like center, and the much-older classical Greek or Cretan patterns. Walking a labyrinth is a popular form of meditation, particularly in hospitals and Christian church buildings and gardens.  Some groups think so highly of this calming exercise, that they have painted portable labyrinths on canvas for spiritual retreats in places where no permanent labyrinth exists.  Some of the public labyrinths in the San Francisco Bay Area may be visited at:

Other Labyrinths in the area are listed here:

You can even have your own home labyrinth by buying a rug of that pattern from the Signals catalogue (pictured below).

Safe Disposal of Old Medicine

IMG_0516

This week, San Francisco Bay Area’s Alameda became the first US county to pass a “Safe Drug Disposal Ordinance” requiring producers of drugs sold or distributed in the county to pay for the safe collection and disposal of unused medications. I noticed this news story because I just took a bag of such medicines to the drop box at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (795 El Camino Real, Palo Alto). About once a year, I go through the medicines in our house, check the expiration date, and put old stuff in a bag for disposal. I have written about challenges Disposing of Toxics when clearing my parents’ house for sale earlier this year. I was pleased to find the PAMF drop box as a safe and easy solution to this ongoing problem. Information on other Bay Area disposal sites is available from the Regional Water Quality Control Plant “cleanbay.org” web site.

Silicon Valley at Your Feet

My Godmother was Margot Patterson Doss who wrote about walking in San Francisco and the SF Bay Area. Her most famous book was called San Francisco at Your Feet: Best Walks in a Walkers City.

I was thinking of Aunt Margot on my way to lunch today in Santa Clara. Walking from my Huawei office to the Bamboo Leaf Vietnamese Restaurant is not far, but I pass by dozens of small Silicon Valley companies. They are nested together in the San Tomas Business Park, one of probably hundreds of such company parks throughout our high-tech valley.

Humanitarian organizations, medical research, telecom, technical research and support companies, and companies whose products are a mystery are all mixed in together.  Each is in an office space that is maybe twenty feet from the door of the next such space.  All that differentiates them is the sign on a series of identical glass doors.

This particular office park has been around long enough to boast large redwoods and other mature trees among its plantings (which make it a pleasant lunchtime walk). I wonder how many of the tightly packed companies have been around long enough to see those trees grow?
