Paul’s Sculptures

My 17-year-old son Paul loves creating sculptures. Starting last year, he built a ceramic and copper boat as an engagement present for his sister Jessica and her fiance Matt. The boat took much longer than planned because someone accidentally set something heavy on top of it when it was half-dry in the Paly art room. Before the boat, Paul created a Rauschenberg Combine interpretation box with copper wire (my Christmas present!). The blue box is supposed to be filled with small green glass bottles but someone recycled the original set, so we are looking for more.

Skype from Qatar

A friend of ours dropped by yesterday with a good bottle of wine to cheer us up after my being laid off by Sun-Oracle last week. During lunch, I was very surprised to receive a phone call on my cell phone from my daughter Jessica who is at school at CMU-Q in Qatar until May 2010.   I ran out of the restaurant trying to find a quiet place to hear why Jessica had called. I was only slightly hyperventilating, really.

Jessica is having fun in Doha, Qatar. (Qatar is east of Saudi Arabia and south of Iran.) Our busy girl is in a musical, a choir, and on the basketball team as well as taking classes at CMU-Q and Georgetown University in Doha’s Education City. We have been talking with her by way of  Skype on a regular schedule. Doha is 11 hours off Pacific Time, so we need to be organized to stay in contact. Yesterday’s call was the first unexpected communication.

It turned out that all is well. Jessica called to say she had found a cheap ticket and would be visiting her fiance Matt in Washington DC over Spring Break instead of traveling around the Middle East as she had planned. It was good to hear her voice.  It always amazes me that I can be standing on the street in Willow Glen, California talking with my daughter who is sitting in her dorm room in Qatar talking to her laptop. I love technology.

News from Doha, Qatar

My 21-year-old daughter Jessica arrived safely in Doha Qatar yesterday and reports that she is settling into her new apartment before starting classes at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q). She will be studying in the Middle East through April 2010.

This week’s Willow Glen Resident community newspaper published an article on Jessica’s work called “Internships help Willow Glen resident narrow career focus” (8 January 2010, by Mary Gottschalk, p.18). The half-page article describes her summer 2009 internship for the World Organization for Human Rights USA in Washington, D.C. and even mentions WP668, our backyard caboose. Jessica is quoted about her internship: “I expected to be dealing with coffee or filing. A lot of my friends were doing piece work and were not trusted with real responsibility…. I learned so much about human rights and how we litigate in the United States. It’s exactly the kind of work I want to do.”

Getting Ready for Christmas

My daughter Jessica arrived home a few days ago but soon left on a ski trip with her fiance Matt and his family. She comes back this afternoon. While she was briefly home, we went to the Great Dickens Christmas Fair at the Cow Palace. My mother and I also went to the Dickens Fair after Thanksgiving with my brother Pete and his family, so we have had quite the Victorian Christmas so far. (I have seen Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado twice this year!) I have also visited family, participated in the annual Sun Labs Christmas Cookie Exchange, and enjoyed the SunCaroler’s Menlo Park campus walking concert, the 1st annual Willow Glen Lions Holiday Party, and other delights of the season.

Daughter News – Engaged, Learning Arabic…

My clever and generally wonderful daughter Jessica just announced her engagement to be married to long-time boyfriend Matt Holmes (also a Junior, Matt studies at the College of William and Mary). Jessica is learning Arabic because she will be a student at CMU-Q (Carnegie Mellon University Quatar, in Doha) next semester. She will be home in about two weeks but then she is off on a family ski trip with the Holmes family. Jessica will be back from skiing just before Christmas and leaving for Doha during the 2nd week of the new year. Somewhere in there we need to hold her engagement party and celebrate her 21st birthday. Matt’s Mom and I are trying to work out party dates and arrangements now…

This will be a busy holiday season for our families!

8 December – Jessica’s story ended up on the blog for the company which sold the engagement rings:  Turtle Love Committee.

Lair of the Golden Bear, “Twilight at Pinecrest”

We got back last week from our annual camping trip. Every year since 1993,
my family has vacationed at the

Lair of the Golden Bear
, the family camp managed by the
U.C. Berkeley Alumni Association.
The Lair is in the Sierras near
Pinecrest.
There are 3 camps within the Lair: Gold, Blue, and Oski.

As usual, John, Jessica, Matt, Paul and I picked up
my mother
Eleanor
in San Francisco and visited Poot’s House of Cactus in Ripon on the drive
to Pinecrest.

In over 50 years of Lair camping, each week has developed its own style and
traditions. Our family is always well represented in the 10th week Camp Blue Review –
the Lair’s Wednesday night talent show. This year, Jessica sang “Losing My Mind”
by Stephen Sondheim (she studies Music at Carnegie Mellon), Matt did gymnastics (he is on the Gymnastics team at
William & Mary
), and the whole family acted in a Cal vs. Stanford vampire skit written by

my brother Pete
, called “Twilight at Pinecrest”.
We celebrated Paul’s birthday with his traditional Lair Cake.

After our week at the Lair, we drove our truck and Yuppie Wagon trailer over
Sonora pass (9,624 feet above sea level) through the stark and lovely
Emigrant Wilderness
to Nevada’s capital Carson City, where we
visited the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
We then drove to Vacaville to see the newly-in-use
Nut Tree train (on a very tiny
track, alas!) and the

Consolidated Rock & Mineral
shop. We stopped off in San Francisco to
drop off my mother and pick up our

two new birds
and then drove home to San Jose.

National Cathedral and Washington DC

A week ago, we got home from a trip to Washington DC. This was my second trip in 6 months to our nation’s capital, after a visit gap of many decades. Even though the weather was very hot and muggy, it was particularly enjoyable to go with my family (my son Paul, daughter Jessica and her boyfriend Matt, husband John, and our friend Laura Biche). We were mostly there to hear Jessica sing opera but during the days, we did manage to visit a few wonderful places: the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans
Memorial
, Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, Smithsonian Natural History Museum, and the National Cathedral. We went by the Folger Shakespeare Library and were sorry to find it closed for the day. Congresswoman Eshoo’s office tried to get us White House tour tickets but they were unavailable.

The National Cathedral was very moving; I had never visited before. Since National Cathedral is Episcopal (and we are Episcopalian), we went to Sunday morning worship services. I have toured big impressive cathedrals and temples in many countries but they almost always belong to someone else’s religion: the Episcopal church mostly erects small buildings. I felt proud that this big beautiful place was created for the glory of God by my own church. The Space Window (including its moon rock fragment, a gift by the Apollo astronauts on the 5th anniversary of their moon landing) was particularly impressive. The memorial windows to Confederate Generals R.E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson and the tomb of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson were also notable.
