Wedding cake, flowers, catering

Flower Flower Mimi Jessica Matthew

My daughter Jessica just paid the deposit on her wedding catering. Mimi Chiang-Brown at Flower Flour in Willow Glen is providing both the flowers and the food for August’s big event. Costco is providing the cake (Bride’s choice!).

Jessica and Matthew (The Couple) and Paul (Groomsman) and I (Mother of the Bride) went last Saturday to Flower Flour to look at pictures and discuss plans.  The same day, Jessica and I also visited the deliriously colorful Britex Fabrics in San Francisco to buy 2-1/2 yards of pink-violet raw silk for a sash for her dress for the reception.

Tomorrow, the Mother of the Groom, the Bride, the Maid of Honor, and I are going shopping to buy the Mothers of the Couple their dresses. I am torturing Jessica by saying that we will be looking for matching polkadot miniskirts…

Jessica Graduated from CMU with Honors!

Jessica Graduation CMU . Jessica Graduation CMU

My daughter Jessica was graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with honors last weekend. Ten of her proud family flew to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from Boston, Pasadena, San Francisco, and San Jose to celebrate the occasion. My father, Wade Dickinson, who attended Carnegie Tech before graduating from West Point was particularly proud to see his granddaughter graduate from his alma mater.

Jessica majored in Ethics, History, and Public Policy (that’s one major offered by CMU in Humanities and Social Sciences). You can see a video of her advisor talking about Jessica’s accomplishments. Jessica was presented with a blank diploma folder because she will return to CMU as a 5th Year Scholar next year, to work on a special project and also complete her Minor in Vocal Music and concentration in Arabic. Jessica got to wear what she calls “commencement flare” in addition to her simple black robes:

  • A red stole for being an Andrew Carnegie Scholar
  • A maroon stole for spending a semester studying at CMU-Q in Doha, Qatar
  • A purple cord with tassels for being an honors student

Unfortunately, Jessica’s fiance Matthew was graduating at the same time from William and Mary hundreds of miles away, so we did not get to attend his commencement. The family did get to spend an afternoon visiting Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece of architecture, Fallingwater, which is like touring an lovely modern sculpture. This is the 75th anniversary for the house built on a waterfall.

Jessica is packing up her house this week to return home to the San Francisco Bay Area for the summer. She is getting married in August, then she and Matt will live in Pittsburgh next year.

Very Busy Christmas

Christmas has been particularly busy this year because my daughter Jessica and son-in-law-to-be Matt are home from college and there is much to do to get ready for their marriage next summer. She will be returning to CMU in ten days and not back until May. Matt will be returning to Willam and Mary. They are both in their Senior year.

Jessica and Matt visited Mount Madonna Park where they want to be married. We bought her wedding shoes and had the first fitting for her wedding gown – the second fitting is next week. (She will be wearing my gown.) Jessica and Matt are shopping for rings and scheduling tastings at the various candidates for wedding caterers. This is in addition to our usual holiday activities and John going to rehearsals for his role as the Magus Melchior in the Epiphany church pageant next Sunday.  Some of what we have been doing:

  • Shopping in San Francisco’s Chinatown with Sally and Lorene for our 28th year – including our annual visit to the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory in Ross Alley
  • Going to craft fairs, seeing holiday lights, and going to parties hosted by other people
  • Silicon Valley Lines model train club holiday party at our house. The highlight of the party is the guests creating a model layout on our living room floor with my G-scale track and trains.
  • Christmas caroling on the cable car in San Francisco
  • Huawei’s holiday party
  • Visiting the Dickens Christmas Fair
  • Christmas eve service at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (Saratoga)
  • Christmas dinner at our house
  • Ladies’ Christmas tea at our house

Paul enjoyed his first quarter at Foothill College. He made us large ceramic Christmas presents, including a large and charming Hedwig the owl which Paul made for Jessica and Matt.  Some pictures:

Convention, Theology of Marriage

IMG_5843

The Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real here on California’s central coast, held its annual convention at St. Andrew’s, Saratoga two days ago. I have been a convention delegate for many years.  This convention was short but very well managed. Our Bishop, the Right Reverend Mary Gray-Reeves, was President of the Convention.  She lead us in worship and took care of business effectively, with charm, intelligence, and humor. My husband John and Rev. Stephenie Cooper ran the computers and projection system for the event, sitting behind the screen and only dashing out to vote as needed.

One of the highlights of the convention for me was the very interesting presentation on the just-published Report
 of
the Diocese
of
El
Camino
 Real
 Task
Force
 on
the
 Theology
of
Marriage . Four of the eight authors talked about their work, process, and findings. The authors are: The
Rev.
 Dr.
 Ernest
 L.
Boyer ,
Jr. (Chair
of
the
Task
Force)
, The
Rev.
Michael
Ferrito,
 The
Rev.
Dr.
Caroline
J.
Addington
Hall,
 The
Rev.
Fred
W.
Heard,
 The
Rev.
Lawrence
Robles,
 The
Rev.
Deacon
Judith
A.
Sato,
 Dr.
Marilyn
Westerkamp,
 and Mrs.
Julie
Zintsmaster. Even though the task force included men and women with a very wide range of opinions, they were able
to
identify
seven
theological statements of a Christian Marriage:

  1. Christian Marriage is a vocation, a calling, a way of living
  2. Christian Marriage is a covenant between two persons and God
  3. Christian Marriage is an expression of human beings as the image of God, that is, an expression of God as Love and God as relationship through the Trinity
  4. Christian Marriage is a call to discover what Christ meant when he asked us to seek Christ in others and to love one another
  5. Christian Marriage is a physical embodiment of our spiritual reality
  6. Christian Marriage is an expression of Christ’s ministry of reconciliation
  7. Christian Marriage is a foundation for community and a Christian service in the world

10th Wedding Anniversary

My husband John and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary last weekend. Since our kids are together in Washington D.C., we had more time to enjoy the special celebration. We went out to dinner twice: first, to La Fondue (in Saratoga, California), and then to Teatro ZinZanni (in San Francisco). Teatro ZinZanni circus, cabaret, and dinner theater is also celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It was great fun!

Here some pictures from last weekend…

Christmas Prep

My family is mostly enjoying the preparations for Christmas. Today, I mailed the
last of six boxes full of gifts to distant friends and relations. Postage cost about $125- this year, even after using three USPS Flat Rate Boxes. The staff in Sun’s Menlo Park Campus mail room helped me with box sizes until we found the cheapest rates.

We don’t have a Christmas tree yet. We are thinking of buying a live tree and then donating it to Our City Forest for planting in January. We hosted the Silicon Valley Lines Model Railroad Club annual holiday party last week. Tonight, we host the
Spiral holiday dinner party. We will also host Christmas dinner, a party to celebrate my daughter Jessica’s 21st Birthday and Engagement, plus New Year’s Eve. In addition to our own celebrations, my husband John Plocher has been helping Santa Maria Urban Ministry (SMUM) with their holiday events and food distribution. I have been working on the St. Andrew’s Medical Assistance (SAMA) Christmas craft sale of goods from the Holy Land.

Busy times!

Daughter News – Engaged, Learning Arabic…

My clever and generally wonderful daughter Jessica just announced her engagement to be married to long-time boyfriend Matt Holmes (also a Junior, Matt studies at the College of William and Mary). Jessica is learning Arabic because she will be a student at CMU-Q (Carnegie Mellon University Quatar, in Doha) next semester. She will be home in about two weeks but then she is off on a family ski trip with the Holmes family. Jessica will be back from skiing just before Christmas and leaving for Doha during the 2nd week of the new year. Somewhere in there we need to hold her engagement party and celebrate her 21st birthday. Matt’s Mom and I are trying to work out party dates and arrangements now…

This will be a busy holiday season for our families!

8 December – Jessica’s story ended up on the blog for the company which sold the engagement rings:  Turtle Love Committee.
