Creekmore Family Reunion, Knoxville Tennessee

IMG_1323

After our visit to Loon Lake, Wisconsin, with the Plocher family last week, John and I flew to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a reunion of my Creekmore relations. My mother, Eleanor Creekmore Dickinson, was born and raised at 1007 Circle Park in Knoxville, spending summers at our Elkmont family cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains. My brothers and I and our cousins and friends also spent many happy childhood weeks at the cabin and nearby swimming hole. My brother Mark is the oldest of our generation and I am next – we have a first cousin who is twenty years younger. More Elkmont history and photos are in my Elkmont, Tennesee 2011 blog entry.

It was delightful to get together with my mother and brothers, aunts and uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews. My mother, Mark, Jessica and Matthew met us in Knoxville.  Unfortunately, Paul could not come because of final exams at Foothill College. My brother Pete was able to bring his whole family.

We went as a group to see “Dear Lodge” – the Creekmore’s Elkmont Cabin #6, now part of the “Elkmont Emergency Stabilization Project” of the US National Park Service’s “Elkmont Historic District: Appalachian Club”. Despite the many “US Property – No Trespassing” signs, the cabin’s back door was flat on the kitchen floor, plus a window and the front door of the cabin were open. However, we were happy that the holes in the floor my daughter saw during her visit in 2008 have been repaired.

We had a big family dinner at Latitude 35 in Knoxville after visiting the mountains.  Part of the fun of a reunion is telling funny stories on each other.  Here is one I shared:

When my brothers and cousins and I were little, our mothers, aunts, and uncles would sometimes take us to a drive-in at night, usually to see a Godzilla monster movie. There would be two cars: the adults would put us kids in one and lock themselves in the other so that they could watch the movie and eat their popcorn in peace. They rolled the windows down just enough to let in the movie speaker and some air. Of course, we kids would quietly get out of our car to sit on the hood or catch frogs in the grass. One evening, we had an idea. We snuck up on the grown-ups’ car and pushed some of our frogs into the window opening. Unfortunately, one of the frogs dropped into my Aunt Mary’s soda and then immediately jumped down the front of her blouse. The resulting commotion in the adult car was  spectacularly noisy. We got in big trouble (but it was worth it!).

Yesterday, John and my mother and I went to service at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral where my parents were married in 1952. Then, we visited the family graves at Highland Memorial Cemetery on the way to the airport.

Big Southern California Wedding

IMG_9561

My brother Pete Dickinson married Julie Gutman last weekend at a big wedding in Southern California. The guests included dignitaries and creative folks and vast numbers of lawyers (since both Pete and Julie are in that line of work) in addition to family. Most of the joyous event was held at the Terranea Resort in a lovely coastal setting.

Except for the bride in white, the wedding party wore red and black – in honor of my father Wade Dickinson who passed away a year ago (his favorite color was red). The mothers of the bride and groom had a lovely time together, surrounded by all of their children and grandchildren.  The Mayor of Los Angeles and the whole City Council signed a beautiful certificate of congratulations and best wishes. California Speaker of the Assembly John Perez participated in the ceremony, and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was a guest. My daughter Jessica sang a song to the couple.

The less extroverted guests retreated into corners to commune with their smart phones and avoid all of the excitement. A good time was had by all.

Cavalia – Wonderful Horse Circus

IMG_0937

IMG_0969

John gave me a belated anniversary present last night: we went to the Cavalia horse circus here in San Jose. It was delightful. The human circus performers and, for the most part, the horses seemed to have as good a time as the audience. John bought us good seats so we could see everything and we even got to visit the 4-footed performers in their tent-barn after the show. The horses are all male but both the men and women executed impressive circus and riding stunts.   There was evident variation in skill among the people but good humor smoothed over the differences.  The music and light shows accompanying each phase were very well done.

I could not take photos – the flash might distract and endanger the performers – but the action was so fast I am not sure how well the images would have turned out anyway.  If there was one disappointment to this fun event, it was the lack of “airs above the ground”. I saw the Lipizzaner show when I was a girl and I was thrilled by the classical dressage movements: levade, courbette, and capriole. The Cavalia show offered one half hearted rear but everything else was four feet down.

Wedding in Shaodong, Hunan, China

IMG_7790

John and his boss Jim Hughes are in Shaodong County, Hunan Province in China for a wedding of friends. John and Jim just called me (early morning my time – late tonight their time) to tell me about their high speed rail ride (ShenZhen to Changsha) and the rehearsal dinner. John said that the telephone poles went by the train window so fast that they blurred – he got car sick unless he looked directly at or looked away from the window. John and Jim were in the premier car in the back of the train with six other passengers – who got their own steward to serve juice. Hunan is famous for its spicy food. At the rehearsal, there were two dinner rooms – one for people who like really spicy food (like Jim) and one for the wimps (everyone else).  John is taking many photos but web access is poor at the hotel so he will not upload until he returns to ShenZhen.  The pictures here are of the happy couple during our Napa Valley California wine tasting trip in May.  The wedding is tomorrow.

July 4th Wedding Anniversary

IMG_9236

John and I were married on 4 July 2000. The 4th of July is a great day to get married. Caterers are available (since most people are home making their own BBQ) and there are always American Independence Day fireworks to celebrate.

When we got married, John and I each had a home with too much stuff already.  What we needed was time to enjoy our family and friends and our big event. So, we outsourced. We asked close friends each to take on a big task (the dress, the cake, flowers, music, wine, catering, whatever) instead of giving a gift. We paid for everything and promised not to micromanage. We are blessed in having organized friends, so everything went perfectly. For guests who needed to give us something, we collected money for shares in a very comfortable Morris chair – that they can come and sit in when they visit. We got married in our own San Jose backyard and we had a wonderful time!

John and I donated the altar flowers today at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Saratoga, CA to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary.

Douglas Fir Discovered

IMG_7196

One of the interesting parts of owning an older house is discovering how it is built. Our 1930 Spanish Mission Revival home in Willow Glen has delightful arts and crafts style details, including oak parquet floors downstairs and on the upstairs landing. When my husband John first bought the house in 1998, many of the floors were covered with icky dark pink carpet. We ripped most of that out and refinished the upper floors and stairs ten years ago.

There was one room downstairs that still had the pink carpet. This is the only downstairs bedroom, so person using it does not have to share a bathroom.  Our son Paul had the room until his sister Jessica moved out last summer, just before she got married. In 2002, Paul and his grandmother painted a mural of the Pokemon fire chicken Moltres on the wall. Late last year, Paul moved into Jessica’s old room upstairs so that my mother could move in after my father died. She and her cats recently moved into a senior community nearby, so we have finally gotten rid of the last of the pink carpet.

Under the horrible cat-stinky carpet, we discovered an equally smelly rug pad. Under that was amazingly ugly linoleum. Today, the linoleum came off and we discovered that we have a potentially-lovely wooden floor of Douglas Fir wood. We are delighted – Doug fir is not as good as oak parquet but it is much better than pink carpet.  We will get the boards refinished and the room will become John’s new office.

Making Pots at Camp

I have written about how proud I am of my son Paul’s pots. This is to show you two of mine:

Katy's Pots 2011 . Katy's Pots 2011

Last week, we went for our annual stay at U.C. Berkeley’s Lair of the Golden Bear family camp. In addition to swimming, singing, and long walks, my family enjoys making ceramics together in the Camp Blue Art Grove. Jessica and Paul and I all made pots while Matt and John kept us company. Paul coached us on our technique using the potter’s wheel. Working with clay under the trees is lovely. We watched the squirrels steal paper towels from the trash to line their winter nests. Seeing a ground squirrel dashing off into the bushes with a wad of wet brown paper in its mouth is funny.

My brother Pete was in a tent nearby with his family. Jessica and Matt were awarded a Camp Blue loving cup (usually given for sports participation) to honor their being newlyweds at camp.
