Adopted Cockatiels – Simon & Garfunkel

Just over a week ago, we picked up our newly-adopted cockatiels, Simon & Garfunkel, at their Mickaboo foster home in San Francisco. We have been enjoying getting to know each other. They are in their office cage next to me now nibbling at each other, butting their heads together, and making squeechy noises.

We have discovered that Garfunkel will bite unless we pick up Simon first. If Simon gets to do something, Garfunkel forgets about biting in his eagerness to join in.

We had them checked out by Dr. Fern Van Sant, DVM, at For the Birds here in San Jose. She said that the guys had been well cared for and loved in their foster home and were about five years old. Both of them have damaged wings – probably from trying to fly in a cage with horizontal bars. Only one wing out of the four had feathers long enough to clip this time but we hope to see their wings growing back.

John and new cockatiels

After our beloved 15-year-old pet Princess Birdie died earlier this summer, we started working with Mickaboo to adopt two cockatiels. Mickaboo is an all-volunteer organization in the San Francisco Bay Area dedicated to rescuing companion birds who have been neglected, abused, injured or surrendered. Or, as their home page says, they are “bird-loving people who want to change the world – one bird at a time.”

After sending-in-the-application and going-to-the-class and being-interviewed-by-phone and being-visited-at-home, Mickaboo approved us to adopt. As a result of what we learned during this extensive pre-adoption process, we bought a bigger bird cage, better bird toys, and different food. We then sent emails to several Mickaboo homes fostering cockatiel pairs to find out about their birds. Last weekend, we went to San Francisco to visit two birds we saw on Mickaboo’s web site and we fell in love. Our two new guys are great singers of duets and will be named Simon & Garfunkel. We are very excited that they will be coming home soon!

50th Wedding Anniversary at Loon Lake

My husband, John Plocher, and Paul and I traveled to Loon Lake, Wisconsin, last week to celebrate John’s parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. We spent the week on a variety of boats and enjoying family in the 75-year-old cottage. There were 9 grandchildren (ages 17 to 3: Micah, Paul, Nathaniel, Gabriel, Leah, Malachai, Zacharias, Isaiah, and Mashayla) who chased caterpillars and crawdads, went fishing with Grandpa, played cards and boardgames and went swimming as often as possible. We missed my daughter Jessica who has an internship this summer in Washington, D.C. The grownups cooked and cleaned, fixed up the cottage, and drove the boats. John and I paddled the canoe from Loon Lake, through a beaver dam, across Washington Lake, to Shawano Lake and back.

This year on Osprey Island in the middle of Loon Lake were one nesting pair of Loons, two pair of Ospreys, and one pair of Bald Eagles plus a blue heron, mallard ducks, and uncountable songbirds. The loons sang to us all night.

Obsessed Towhee

We have an obsessed California Towhee attacking our car mirrors. A Towhee is a middle sized brown sparrow. For months, we have found our car side mirrors all dirty and bird poop down the door under each mirror. Our Willow Glen neighbor Jamie Lynch has the same problem. He said he saw a Towhee attacking its image in his mirrors and spoke sternly to it. Today, I am working from home and finally caught the crazy little culprit on film:

Certify Your Habitat

My backyard is now a Wildlife Habitat certified by the National Wildlife Federation. I found out about this program from our new neighbor, Linda, who is also an enthusiastic gardener. Linda is delighted to have moved in so close to the Guadalupe River here in San Jose, California. According to  Wikipedia, the Guadalupe is the only known salmon spawning river running through a major U.S. downtown area (outside of Anchorage, Alaska). The Guadalupe is not only a river of water and fish but also of ducks, geese, song birds, humming birds, hawks, vultures, racoons, opossums, cats, squirrels (grey, black, and gold), snakes, lizards, Jerusalem crickets, and homeless people. John and I own to the middle of the river along our back property, so providing a wildlife habitat means not messing up what we already have.

To provide certification, the National Wildlife Federation asks that elements from each of the following areas be provided:

    • Food Sources. For example: Native plants, seeds, fruits, nuts, berries, nectar
    • Water Sources. For example: Birdbath, pond, water garden, stream
    • Places for Cover. For example: Thicket, rockpile, birdhouse
    • Places to Raise Young. For example: Dense shrubs, vegetation, nesting box, pond
    • Sustainable Gardening. For example: Mulch, compost, rain garden, chemical-free fertilizer

Here is my new certificate:
