Clausen House Art Show

Clausen House is a registered charitable institution that provides housing, wellness programs, and advocacy for developmentally disabled adults in Oakland and the surrounding San Francisco East Bay area. As a member of the Board of Directors, I am supporting Clausen House staff working on the annual Art Show, including holding several art creation sessions with clients. I brought in art history books for clients to look through. It was interesting to see two create portraits of Nefertiti, and another be inspired by the Paleolithic era Venus of Lespugue. Please plan to attend the Art Show on 20 October 2023 to view and purchase these and other delightful creations.

Thanks to the Mountain View Odd Fellows Lodge for donating some of the frames!

Paul’s Badè Museum Visit

Bade Museum of Biblical Archaeology sign, Berkeley CA 21019 Bade Museum, Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, Dec 2019

As a potter and ceramic spatial artist, my son Paul D. Goodman was very interested in my recent archaeology class at Pacific School of Religion with Dr. Aaron Brody, Robert and Kathryn Riddell Professor of Bible and Archaeology, and Director of the Badè Museum of Biblical Archaeology. Professor Brody generously agreed to let Paul visit the museum archives yesterday to see some of the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and later artifacts found during 1926-1935 by Professor William F. Bade at Tell en-Nasbeh, Israel.

Paul particularly loved being able to touch the ancient ceramics and tools. He said it was the first time since our 2010 trip to Egypt that he had been able to hold something with that much history in it. Professor Brody and Paul discussed the chemistry and mineralogy involved in potting and firing, and the geology of some of the museum’s stone objects. A fun visit!

Arts and Crafts in Sierra Leone

In addition to meeting new people and mentoring, style, fashion, and exploring local markets have been some of my great joys during many trips to Africa. The recent TechWomen Delegation to Sierra Leone was no exception. This is an update on my 2017 blog post Fabric Arts and Crafts in Sierra Leone. Having shopped in Sierra Leone before, my daughter Jessica and I arrived with clear ideas on what we wanted to bring home this time.

An unexpected delight was that TechWomen Fellow, Engineer, and fashion entrepreneur Michelle Sesay (of House of Cordelia in Freetown) generously offered to have clothes made to order for the TechWomen mentors. She brought fabric and some made-up samples, took our measures and design ideas, and delivered wonders. Her tailor is amazing! Jessica and I and most of the TechWomen wore our new outfits to the final dinner.

In addition, Jessica and I brought home bolts of fabric, batik, and wood carvings as presents and to decorate our homes. After experiencing the design and color flair in West Africa, the San Francisco Bay Area is visually boring.

Paul’s Computer Drawings

Paul D Goodman 2007 computer drawing of loon
On October 10, 2007, I posted two of my son Paul’s drawings – one from 1999 and the other from his first Palo Alto High School art class, this year. Here are three more images that Paul created on his laptop computer. Paul is 15 years old and spends time each day drawing on his laptop. Since he has a variety of learning disabilities, it is a joy to see him express himself so well artistically. Paul has also discovered SketchUp and is having a wonderful time drawing 3-D images (which are harder to show in a blog).

Paul’s Drawings

Paul D Goodman 2007 ink drawing spirals
My son Paul is just 15 and is taking his first Palo Alto High School art class as a Sophomore. He spends hours each day drawing on his laptop, so we have been curious to see how he does with more traditional art materials like charcoal, ink, and paint. In 1999, when Paul was in 2nd grade at Peninsula School, one of his drawings was selected for a children’s art show at the Animal Art Gallery in Menlo Park, California, – his first exhibit! I include that drawing below with one of his recent pictures. For the spiral picture, Paul’s art teacher asked the students to use black and white to show negative space with a clear center point.
