Paul was Admitted to SJSU!

P1150966

My son Paul was just admitted to San Jose State University (California’s first public institution of higher learning – founded in 1857). He will be studying Art and Studio Practice for a SJSU Bachelor of Arts degree. Paul will graduate with his Associate of Arts degree in Studio Art from Foothill College in June 2014 and start at SJSU in September. We are so proud of him! You can see Paul’s art portfolio on his website: Paul’s Element.

I am particularly happy that Paul got his acceptance package after reading yesterday’s sad article “Students With Disabilities Aim For A College Degree, But Often Get Stuck” (by Joy Resmovits in The Huffington Post). In my last blog entry about Paul’s progress, I presented some of our challenges with the educational system. Paul’s hard work and dedication have now paid off. Hooray!

TechWomen Rwanda Press

The TechWomen delegation to Rwanda earlier this month was honored to receive a great deal of local and US media attention, before, during, and after our journey.  New stories are still coming in…

Pete Dickinson on Front Page

P1110576

More recent Dickinson family news… my brother Pete Dickinson (aka Peter S. Dickinson, Partner at Bush Gottlieb in Glendale, CA) was pictured on the front cover of the Los Angeles Daily Journal in the lead article “Health Law Unfair to Unions, Lawyers Say” (by Laura Hautala).  The news photo caption says: “Peter S. Dickinson, an attorney with Bush, Gottlieb, Singer, Lopez, Kohanski, Adelstein & Dickinson who represent labor interests, says unions are not happy with a provision of the Affordable Care Act they say is unfair to them.”

The LA Daily Journal articles are not online, so Pete is pictured on the left above with two Thanksgiving friends.  Since Pete does not read my blog anyway, he will not mind this silly picture. I am very proud of Pete!

Eleanor Dickinson’s 83rd Birthday & Art Show

My mother Eleanor Dickinson celebrated her 83rd birthday while I was with the TechWomen delegation to Rwanda earlier this month. While I was gone, she attended the College Art Association annual conference in Chicago. Now that we are both back home in San Jose, California, I delivered her birthday presents today and enjoyed seeing the “Sketch Book Drawings” exhibit of 64 small pictures that the Atria Willow Glen senior community put up. The images are of residents, staff, and visitors – most are in pencil but a few are in ink or watercolor. I am proud of my mother having two current shows at the age of 83! Her “Old Lovers” exhibit at the Peninsula Museum of Art is open through 16 March 2014.

Women in Wood

P1150833

I was pleased to find a small carving of a traditional woman while shopping with the TechWomen who joined the delegation to Rwanda earlier this month. The picture above shows three such carvings I own:

  • A cedar wood carving from Morocco (2011) of a fully-covered woman (6-1/2″)
  • A jacaranda wood carving from Rwanda (2014) of a woman bearing a peace basket on her head and carrying a child on her back (10-1/2″)
  • An olive wood carving from Israel (2006) of Ruth with a sickle in one hand and a bundle of grain under her arm (10″)

I enjoy the contrasts in costume, wood color and grain, and artistry in these three depictions of female figures from very different cultures.  The carving to show the drape of fabric is particularly interesting.  Also, that the hair is explicitly covered and the movement of each body seems more important than the face.  These are craft pieces – carved for and sold in large numbers to tourists: they are not fine art.  This may mean that such little craft figures are more representative of cultural standards for women than individual portraits would be.

Where we stayed in Rwanda

P1120981

Here is information on the hotels for the forty TechWomen delegates in Rwanda. Of course, the five local TechWomen Emerging Leaders stayed in their homes. While in Kigali, most of the delegation stayed at the Hotel des Milles Collines (the setting for the story, if not the film location, of the historical drama Hotel Rwanda, about the Rwanda Genocide). The Mille Collines was friendly and comfortable and the food was good. Unfortunately, the hotel wifi was unable to handle so many geeks at one time: it regularly crashed within minutes of the delegation getting back from our daily adventures. Many of us also had to get a new key card every time we wanted to open our Mille Collines room door (six times most days) but the hotel staff were so friendly it was hard to grouse about it. There is live music nightly at the Mille Collines and the hotel is in easy walking distance to shopping.

Several TechWomen mentors stayed at the nearby Heaven restaurant and inn – where one night the whole delegation enjoyed a spectacular dinner and dance together. One mentor stayed with a local family, arranged through Airbnb – and said she enjoyed her experience. While we were trekking to see the mountain gorillas and monkeys, we stayed at the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge. I think some ladies started out at a different hotel and then moved to the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge.

What’s the difference between copies, backups and archives?

IMG_7134

While I was traveling in Rwanda, my husband John published a blog entry on the eVault website: “What’s the difference between copies, backups and archives?” John used the 2011 picture of our daughter Jessica as a bride to “…step back for a bit and ask ourselves what needs to be done to ensure that this precious digitally born image is still available in the future, for our (still hypothetical at this point) granddaughter’s wedding?”
