45 feet of track mostly done, and planting trees

John has mostly assembled our 45′ long railroad track. It is good
that we got extra spikes, ties, and tie plates. Since we are
(obviously) using materials that have been used before, some are worn
in odd ways, bent, slightly off standard, or damaged. The wooden
ties in particular have lots of character. Once all of the tie plates
and spikes are in, we can get the ballast installed around the ties.
We are hoping that the variety in lengths and widths of the ties will
not look bad once they are settled into the gravel.

I have planted 3 trees while the track was being installed – a 4th
sequoia “Aptos” in the side yard, a 2nd Western Redbud on the bank, and a 3rd
California pepper down the embankment. The ground is not quite sloppy mud
but it is still wet enough to dig and settle in new trees.

Mentor Matching, Day 10

On Day Ten of the SEED mentor matching cycle,
we have matched 20 out of the 28 legacy StorageTek SEED mentoring
participants. I am pleased that we completed 57% of the matches in
the first week – very quick indeed! Last term, we had 25% matcbed in
week 1; the term before that, we matched 18% in week 1.

Nonetheless, we have been getting more email than we expected of the
“why am I not matched yet?” variety. Each SEED participant is by the
nature of things new to our process and of course wants to be matched
right away.

16 of those matched were accepted by the first potential mentor we
asked. There are a few participants for whom we have asked 3 mentors so far.
There are a few people for whom we are on number seven or eight of their
15 person Mentor Wish List. (Not everyone on each Mentor Wish List gets asked
because there are lots of duplicate requests and, of course, some people
are known to be unavailable.) However, most are still being considered by
someone in their top four choices. Historically, 75% to 85% of
SEED participants are matched with a mentor who is in their top four.

I have started sending out the invitations to potential speakers for
our September world-wide
SEED meeting and should be able to announce the dates soon. Tanya Jankot
and I are well into our preparations for the next world-wide regular
SEED terms, to be announced in May 2006 and start in September 2006.

Ties, Plates, Spikes and Rails

We have moved all of the ties, spikes, and rails into the backyard
caboose rail bed. We have put all of the wooden ties down and have
them appropriately spaced. John picked up the rail plates from
the GGRM yesterday.

Next steps to complete this construction phase:

  • Put 2 steel plates on each wooden tie
  • Put one steel spike partway into each plate to hold it in place
  • Cut one of the three 30-foot steel rails in half
  • Move the rails into place on the plates: one 30-foot rail and one
15-foot rail (half rail) on each side

  • Attach the 30-foot rail sections and 15-foot rail sections with
    rail joiners

  • Put in the 2nd spike and drive in both spikes
  • Put down the ballast (large gravel) around the ties
  • Tamp and level the ties
  • Stand back and admire our new 45 foot long caboose rail line

As our friend Wendy says, when you are working with pieces that weigh
half a ton (like train rails), you do a lot of thinking before you
do a little lifting.

Mentor Matching, Day 4

Mentor matching for the SEED legacy StorageTek term is going very
well. We have 14 out of 28 participants matched so far. A wide variety
of very senior executives have signed up as mentors this term:
they include VPs from Scalable Systems, IT, Legal, Software, and Operations.
Almost every participant has been matched with either their first or
second choice mentor. Of course, some mentors have declined to participate
but in general we are getting a high number of acceptances.

Some Participants will be considered by six or more potential Mentors before a
good match is found. Others are immediately matched with their first choice.
Each potential Mentor may have multiple email, phone, or personal contacts
with SEED’s program staff. Potential Mentors are contacted serially in
priority order and each one may take a long time to respond and then decide.

The Participant is not kept informed of each step in the match process. They
do not know which potential mentor from the “Wish List” is contacted.
Potential mentors need to have space and time to consider the possibilities
of a mentoring partnership without risk of offending the potential mentee
or interfering with future communications with them or their manager.

Caboose Ties & Track

After several dry days (we were beginning to look around for Noah after
40 days of rain), we have finally been able to move the wooden
ties into place on the partially complete railbed in our backyard. John
was going to rent a forklift Bobcat for delivery tomorrow but the company
had one ready to deliver yesterday. David, one of our neighbor DeWayne’s
wrestling students, had some time to help so he and John moved the ties
from the front driveway to the backyard and put them in place.

After several attempts, the steel rails (which weigh about 1,000 pounds
each) finally got relocated to the street in front of the house. Then
it started to rain again. If there is another dry spell, the rails will
get shifted to the backyard today too. We have three rails, each about
30 feet long. One rail needs to be cut in
half so that we can create two 45 foot rail sections. The rails need to be
in place before we can move in the caboose.

All of the guys in the neighborhood regularly come over to watch, help,
and offer advice. There are usually two or three of them
hanging out with the big boy toys whenever we rent a Bobcat or other
piece of construction equipment.

Now that the ties are in place, the contractor can come and fill between
the ties with gravel (ballast). The top of the ties and top of the ballast
will be just below ground level. The addition of the rail plates
and rails will bring the bottom of the caboose’s wheels to slightly
above ground level. This is an important consideration because of
building height limitations in San Jose. We still need to get the railplates
from a local railroad museum. They are all paid for but not yet delivered.

We are still checking on WP668 in storage every day. The inside looks
dry despite the rain and as far as we can tell, no one has tried to break
in or damage it.

Mentor Matching Starts

The final versions of the legacy-StorageTek SEED term Mentor
Wish Lists were due in at 9 a.m. today, California time. Tanya
Jankot and I put together a first contact list based on those
28 wish lists. Then, I sent out the first email invitations to
the potential mentors. Only two immediately responded declining
the invitation. We already have one match plus five strong
expressions of interest – a good start!

Last term, we completed all of the matches in 3 weeks. It is more
usual to take 6 weeks for the full mentor matching cycle.

All Mentor Wish Lists Done

All of the first pass SEED Mentor Wish Lists have been turned
in. Today was the deadline. Tanya Jankot and I have been reviewing
the lists as they arrived. Tanya has also been working with the
new SEEDs on personalizing their web pages.

I have responded to a large number of the SEED participants advising
changes in choice or presentation. I hope
we get all of those revised lists in today too. Sometimes
participants include potential mentors who are known to be unavailable
(and are so marked on the “Potential Mentors” web page),
sometimes they provide reasons for preference which will
not represent them at their best to a potential mentor.

Tomorrow morning, Tanya and I will review all of the lists, put togther
the first pass contact list, and send out the first invitations
to the mentors themselves. I hope we will have our first matches
made by this time tomorrow!
