Caboose Stained Glass Update

The restoration of WP668, our backyard caboose, is making progress:

  • Last weekend, John continued to install the wood facing which holds the new window frame in the bay. (For comparison, I included a photo of what WP668’s damaged bay window looked like when we first saw it in December 2005.)
  • Last month’s storms blew down our 94′ fence which runs along the side of WP668. I am working to get that replaced. I already had Davey Tree out to trim the trees and dracenas in the way of the new fence.
  • Stained glass artist Vince Taylor brought by his drawing for WP668’s new window, along with some glass samples. If you look closely at my photo of Vince’s drawing below, you will see the silhouette of a train in the hills. Vince is using the photo by Dave Stanley below as inspiration for the train image. (1973 photo used with permission of Dave Stanley.) Vince is also going to add a lizard silhouette to one of the rocks in the foreground.

SAMA Middle Eastern Recipes

Last night I updated the new SAMA web page and started adding Middle Eastern
Recipes – see http://st-andrews-sama.org.
SAMA – St. Andrew’s Medical Assistance – is an outreach program of
St. Andrew’s Episcopal
Church
. We are getting ready for the SAMA fundraising dinner (to be on Sunday,
13 April 2008 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 13601 Saratoga Avenue,
Saratoga, CA.) There will be Middle Eastern food and an auction. I am
in charge of event publicity.

SAMA published a small cookbook called “Favorite Middle Eastern Recipes” some
time ago. The recipes I just added to the web site are:

    • Baba Ghannouj (Eggplant Dip)
    • Hummos bi Tahini (Garbanzo Bean Dip)
    • Fatoosh
    • Khyar bi Leban (Cucumber with Yogurt)

I will add more recipes as I get them typed in. I also added links to SAMA’s

Middle Eastern Fashion show
photos and some of my pictures
of St. Andrew’s lovely stained glass windows:

Transit Maps of the World

On
August 4, 2006
, I wrote about the subway map project

Danny Cohen
and I have been working on for some years. Recently,
a new book was published for those who share our interest:

Transit Maps of the World – The World’s First Collection of
Every Urban Train Map on Earth

by Mark Ovenden, Penguin, 2007

ISBN-10: 0143112651,
ISBN-13: 978-0143112655

This fascinating new book “brings together for the first time in a single volume
the official current metro maps and diagrams from over 100 of
the world’s major Subway, U-Bahn, Metro and Underground systems.”

Below are some photos of Danny’s and my own map collection here in the
Sun Labs Menlo Park, CA, building.
Our most recent acquisition is a small card showing the Tokyo subway. Along
with our maps is a London Transport
Museum
poster of Harry Beck’s original London underground map.

Pancake Supper and Races (St. Andrew’s, Saratoga)

On Tuesday (5 February), we held a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper and race at
our parish, St. Andrew’s
Episcopal Church
in Saratoga, CA. The Pancake Race
is one of our family’s favorite church festivals and we helped manage the event
in partnership with St. Andrew’s amazing Youth Group.
My daughter Jessica was sad she could not join us this year (she is at Carnegie Mellon
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). She wrote out her

“How to run a Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper and race”
instructions in case
anyone wants to hold their own pre-Lent celebration. (She said last night that this
has been her most popular blog post so far!) John and I sent Jessica our notes on
this week’s event and she wrote an

update blog entry
today. For those who don’t know

Shrove Tuesday
from
Mardi Gras
, read
The Unofficial Olney Page
for one version of how the famous tradition got started
in 1445 in Olney, England.

Here are some photos from St. Andrew’s grand event. As you can see, we had
races between little kids, older kids, teens, and mixed groups. All the racers
won a strand of sugar beads (which also were the table decorations).

SEED Events and Tea Photos

Sun’s SEED Engineering mentoring program offers monthly meetings as well as some
local events. Most of the monthly meetings are by phone. We are now planning
SEED’s annual MidTerm in-person meeting, to be on 11 April. We have confirmations
so far from the following speakers:

Jonathan Schwartz
(Chief Executive Officer and President),

David Yen
(Executive Vice President, Microelectronics), plus
Tiki Dare (Associate General Counsel). I am in discussions with other
potential presenters now.

SEED’s regular monthly meetings provide opportunities for current and alumni
program Participants, Managers, and Mentors to get to know each other, share
experiences, and talk with Sun executives and engineering leaders. Sometimes the
topics are very practical – such as an overview of intellectual property law or
how Sun’s engineering career paths work – but other talks are intended to broaden
awareness of technical or business potentials at Sun.

One of the local SEED events held here on Sun’s Menlo Park, CA campus is our
weekly tea during which we serve hot tea from all over the world, plus cookies,
and other goodies. The weekly tea offers an informal setting in which local
and visiting SEEDs who want to know other people in the program can drop by to
visit and chat. Tea is held in a library and casual meeting room in
Sun Labs called “The
Noosphere“.

At yesterday afternoon’s tea, I took some photos to brighten up the SEED
schedule web page. Here they are:
