Finch Fest

I recently purchased a
finch
feeder and hung it on the railing
of our upstairs deck – well above where the neighborhood cats lurk. The two nearest
trees are a lemon and an almond with no big branches within cat leaping distance.
Living on the
Guadalupe River
in San Jose, California, our yard is home to wild birds of
all kinds. This is at least the third finch feeder in our immediate neighborhood –
Jamie has one and Linda does too – but there seem to be more than enough little
birds for everyone.

The lady in the shop where I bought the tube feeder (an Aspects Nyjer Mesh Feeder) said
there are seven types of finches in California. She recommended Nyjer Thistle (or
black thistle) seeds as a favorite food. I don’t know the names of our birds but
they are mostly green or yellow with black and white accents. I am reading about
finches on the
Cornell Lab of Ornithology “All About Birds”
web site.

No finches showed interest when we first put up the
feeder; however, a month later the little greedy guts are going through a full
tube of seed every few days. The brick walkway below the feeder is black with
chaff and spilled seed. My husband said our local mourning doves and smaller songbirds
eat the thistle seed that falls.

The finches constantly squabble and peck and peep at each other when not
actually eating. They do not seem to care whether they are up, down, or sideways
when eating. They look around and shift position regularly and all flit off at any
danger sign. (We slowly sneak up on them to take pictures.) I feel peaceful watching
these lively little birds.

Homage to Beck Subway and Metro Maps

I have written from time to time about the subway and metro map collection
Sun Distinguished Engineer
Danny Cohen
and I have been building for some years in
Sun Labs Menlo Park, CA. Last May, a
large part of our map collection was destroyed due to a misunderstanding
on the part of a facilities contractor. I am pleased to announce that
our Homage to Beck metro map boards are back –
better than before! After facilities staff and others donated new maps, Danny and I now
have enough for two extra-large bulletin boards in addition to our original board.
We have maps of:

* Amsterdam     * Bangkok     * Barcelona
* Boston        * Budapest    * Cairo Egypt
* Chicago       * Frankfurt   * Hamburg
* Helsinki      * Hong Kong   * Houston
* Kuala Lampur * London * Lyon France
* Madrid        * Marseilles  * Moscow Russia
* Munich        * New York    * Oslo
* Paris         * Prague      * Rome
* San Francisco * Santa Clara * Seoul
* Singapore * Sofia * St. Petersburg Russia
* Stockholm     * Sydney      * Taipei
* Tokyo         * Washington  * Wellington NZ
* Zurich

All of the maps in our collection present a design that derives
at least partially from

Harry Beck’s 1933 London subway map
. The point of the display is that excellent
design communicates across cultures and can perpetuate itself through inspiration.

Sun Leadership Connections for VPs/Directors

Next week, I am in a new full-time class for Sun Directors and
Vice Presidents. The class is called “Leadership Connections” and it requires
a great deal of preparation. In early July, everyone scheduled for next week’s
session was sent an email from Sun’s CEO and President,
Jonathan Schwarz:

      “Sun’s people are our biggest competitive advantage. And it’s your leadership of our global teams, both the people you select and the decisions you make, that are at the heart of Sun’s next generation.

      You’ve probably heard me talk about courage – the single most important attribute for a leader at Sun. Leaders have to demonstrate the courage to innovate, to act with integrity, to collaborate, and act with pace and urgency. I trust you to make those decisions on behalf of our business.

      We invest for the long-run when it comes to talent. Leadership development is a marathon, not a sprint – that’s why we recently announced the new Sun Leadership Academy.

      So I’d like to invite you to participate in our Leadership Connections…”

Since that email, I have taken the three required style, personality, and effectiveness
evaluations (including a “360” for which I invited thirty of my peers, customers, bosses,
and coworkers to provide specific feedback), and had a coaching session with an
organizational psychologist. Today, I am trying to finish two web-based pre-training
business classes. I plan to review all of the materials again over the weekend.

I have heard from other executives that this new class is very good and
worth the time. I am curious and looking forward to it. More news when I
have some…

Excellence in Preaching

My home church of St. Andrew’s Episcopal is hosting a free three part series on how to listen and what to look for in sermons. Three remarkably gifted, different, and distinguished speakers and authors will each have one day to preach twice (at 8 am and 10 am) and then offer a ninety minute seminar (11:30 am – 1 pm):

    • 14 September 2008: Rev. Donald Schell, All Saints Company Consultant and Creative Director and founder of St. Gregory’s, San Francisco
    • 26 October 2008: Rev. Dr. Rebecca Lyman, Professor Emerita of History, Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP), Berkeley
    • 16 November 2008: Rev. Dr. Bill Countryman, Professor Emeritus of Biblical studies, Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP), Berkeley

The series is designed to better equip the listener to recognize and respond to different preaching styles – and to appreciate even those styles that may differ from personal preference. All are welcome, whether or not they are members of the Episcopal church. For more information, please call 408-867-3493.

I am particularly looking forward to hearing the Rev. Dr. Rebecca Lyman again as I very much enjoyed reading her 1999 history Early Christian Traditions. My favorite passage from that work:

“Whereas uniformity requires enforcement, consistency demands discernment. Discernment is a more complicated task, requiring
that we recognize the fundamental similarities between apparent differences. Many of the ancient struggles over theology and authority reflect this difficult institutional and personal process.”

wp668.org – WP668 Caboose Story

I have been adding photos and information to the new WP668 railroad caboose
home page at http://wp668.org. By
putting the history of our backyard caboose out there, I hope I will be contacted
by people who have additional photos or stories. It may also be of use to others
starting on a similar project. (Surprisingly, I have been contacted by several
such people in the last few years.) I am pleased now to have one place for a summary and
key image archive on WP668. I am mostly finished with
http://wp668.org, even though I keep thinking of
more stuff to add.
