Dowsing in San Jose

Our city services in
Willow Glen
(San Jose, CA) have been painting up our streets lately. For blocks
around, the asphalt is now decorated with new cryptic spray paint
markings (in white, yellow, orange, red): marking water lines, gas lines,
and the underground locations of all of the other infrastructure bits
below the street. I suspect they will be digging holes in the street soon…

On our block, the water company is trying to figure out where their “blow
off valve” is at the end of the water main line. Our house was built on
the
Guadalupe River
in 1930. The street dead ends into our front walk.
Before our neighborhood of houses was built, local historians tell us
that there was a chicken farm and a
prickly pear cactus
farm on the property. We ran into the remaining foundations of the barn
several feet underground when we put in our new fence last year.

Since our house is the end of the line, the water company thinks their
valve is somewhere in our front yard – under the lawn or under my
agave plants. They
have been back several times to look. Two days ago, John talked with some
water company employees who were waving electronics over our front yard.
He then watched them poke long probes into the dirt. Finally, he saw
one of them trying to find stuff underground with a copper
dowsing rod.
If high tech does not work, try paranormal powers!

Holy Week, Passover, Egg Hunt

Last week was Holy Week for the Episcopal Church, ending the Christian season Lent with the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday. 2009 was one of those rare calendar years when the Jewish Passover celebration coincided with Holy Week. So, St. Andrew’s celebration of the
Last Supper or seder on Maundy Thursday actually took place on Passover.

Our family was in church on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and on Saturday night for the Easter Vigil. John and I both read Genesis passages during the mostly-candlelit Easter Vigil. He read the story of
Noah’s ark and I read about the Sacrifice of Isaac. There were five baptisms, wonderful music, and lovely flowers.

However, Easter morning itself was dedicated to a private celebration of Spring’s renewal of life: our family Easter Egg Hunt. We worked on the garden for weeks in preparation. We hosted ten happy children, plus twenty adults for our annual egg hunt and
garden party.

The Easter Bunny hid over 150 eggs, including the gold and silver
eggs for adults. The Bunny leaves two poems as the only clues:

Gold Egg Poem

You can’t see me even a bit,

But I can see little birds fly.

On the uppermost tier I sit

Hard earth protects me ‘though I’m high.

Silver Egg Poem

Dark and dirty, I’m down low,

Between the sleepers to be found.

Don’t hit your head or hit your toe,

Be careful looking for my mound!

The silver egg was under WP668, our backyard caboose (in the ballast). It was found quickly. However, the gold egg took hours to locate: it was under a flowerpot sitting on the retaining wall. I traded big chocolate bunnies for the gold and silver eggs to the two children who found them. They were delighted with the prizes (and to have found the eggs intended for the grownups!).

PreSEED mentoring term open for applications

Just about two hours ago, I sent out the world-wide all-Engineering
announcement that Sun’s new PreSEED mentoring term is accepting
applications from today through 30 April. We linked up the overview
pages a few days ago so potential applicants could review the material
and get ready.

The SEED program
ran two pilots to test out PreSEED in 2008. This is our second regular
PreSEED term.
One way to think of PreSEED is as a preliminary to Sun’s successful SEED Engineering mentoring program. Since 2001, the CTO-sponsored SEED program has a proven track record of strong diversity, very high satisfaction, high regard by management, and high retention. SEED participants as a group earn more promotions and higher performance ratings than Sun overall. Of course,
individual experiences will vary.

PreSEED has a time-based acceptance process (we take
the first 50 with complete and verified applications), so I was not
surprised to see applications start arriving quickly. So far, eight
have come in and one is already complete. Lots of email questions too…

Flying Pigs

You may have read my
Finch Fest
blog entry on 7 September 2008 about our new bird feeder.
It has been such a popular item that our San Jose yard is even more full
of birds than usual. We now call our tiny visitors “flying pigs” since
they can go through an entire tube of black thistle seed in three days.
In the Winter, their colors are mostly brown to green. John took
some photos today of our piggies in their brighter Spring colors.
Most today seem to be

American Goldfinches
but we get other finch varieties as well.

In addition to the finches, we have many much larger birds:
two noisy pairs of
Canada Geese,
two pairs of
Mallard ducks
, two pairs of

Mourning doves
, and others enjoying our location on the

Guadalupe River
.

Birthday Flowers

My husband
John Plocher
hates to shop but he does have three favorite stores:

    • Micro Center
      computer and electronics store chain
    • The Train Shop (1829 Pruneridge Avenue, Santa Clara, CA 95050,
      (408) 296-1050) model train shop
    • Williams-Sonoma
      cooking store chain

For his recent birthday, I took John to Williams-Sonoma at the
Stanford Shopping Center to pick out
his present. The Stanford outdoor mall has a lovely and innovative flower display
year-round but the Spring flowers are particularly gorgeous. Some of the
colors glow so brilliantly, they do not look real.

John held still for pictures because he was on the phone with our daughter Jessica,
sorting out Poetry and Prose Performances Project (“P4”) computer questions. Jessica is recording
literary classics for P4 on YouTube.

Signs Afoot

My husband and I go for a long walk around our north Willow Glen neighborhood almost every evening. After years of covering the same ground, I noticed the wide variety and age of signs and marks under foot. A humble history is written in the pavement.

First are the concrete marks – impressions indicating what company installed the sidewalk and what year they did it. All of the marks seem to be dated between 1940 and 1967. The WPA (Works Progress Administration) put in the oldest walks during the Great Depression, followed by contract concrete companies during the 1950s and 1960s. Newer sidewalks are not so marked.

The Willow Glen community centers around Lincoln Avenue (one of the regular areas where we walk), renamed in 1865 after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Willow Glen voted to become part of San Jose in 1936 but still has its own newspapers, community blog, Founders Day parade and other unique events.

On our walks I see many pavement service covers (manhole covers, water and telephone access plates, drain grates, etc.) that are marked not only with their function but who made them and where they were made. Some are brass or steel, some concrete, some are made of plastic resin. Some designs are ornate but others are very plain. All of the marked locations are either in the local San Francisco Bay Area (Oakland, San Francisco, Los Gatos, or San Jose, California) or very far away (China, India, Mexico). Technology generations are represented by Bell System (defunct company), Pacific Telephone (defunct company), SBC (defunct company), Broadband…

Come walk with me to see this strange collection…
