21 Applicants to PreSEED So Far

Yesterday, I sent out the world-wide all-Engineering
announcement that Sun’s new PreSEED mentoring term is accepting
applications through 30 April. We have 21 applicants
already; 7 of the applications are complete. PreSEED has a time-based
acceptance process: we will take the first 50 with complete and verified
applications. During the most recent PreSEED term in 2008, the first
50 applications were completed by the 12th day of the application period.

One way to think of PreSEED is as a preliminary to Sun’s successful
SEED Engineering mentoring program. Since 2001, the CTO-sponsored SEED program has a proven track record of strong diversity, very high satisfaction, high regard by management, and high retention. SEED participants as a group earn more promotions and higher performance ratings than Sun overall. Of course, individual experiences
will vary.

We set up PreSEED with a time-based acceptance rather than a content-based system like SEED’s to accommodate PreSEED’s target population: Members of Sun’s Technical Staff who have been getting almost all “Sun Standard” (2 or Standard-level) performance ratings. Other aspects of PreSEED (such as the required preliminary discussion between mentee and manager, the required training of mentor-mentee, and the option of joining SEED in the future) are also part of the program because PreSEED’s participants are often more junior in terms of professional accomplishment than are SEED’s. Since many of the PreSEED applicants are at about the same level of career achievement, we created an acceptance system that did not focus on small or potentially-arbitrary differences in accomplishment. Thus, the time-based acceptances.

SEED mentoring term open for Global Sales and Services

Peter Ryan
, Sun’s Executive Vice President for Global Sales & Services,
today announced the opening of applications for the second GSS worldwide
SEED mentoring term.
The application period ends 30 April 2009.
The first GSS mentoring term started in January; this second
term will run from 15 June. The SEED program has been working to develop
the two GSS-only terms with 13-time SEED mentor

Hal Stern
(Vice President, Global Systems Engineering, GSS)
for about a year. It is good to get this announced!

PreSEED mentoring term open for applications

Just about two hours ago, I sent out the world-wide all-Engineering
announcement that Sun’s new PreSEED mentoring term is accepting
applications from today through 30 April. We linked up the overview
pages a few days ago so potential applicants could review the material
and get ready.

The SEED program
ran two pilots to test out PreSEED in 2008. This is our second regular
PreSEED term.
One way to think of PreSEED is as a preliminary to Sun’s successful SEED Engineering mentoring program. Since 2001, the CTO-sponsored SEED program has a proven track record of strong diversity, very high satisfaction, high regard by management, and high retention. SEED participants as a group earn more promotions and higher performance ratings than Sun overall. Of course,
individual experiences will vary.

PreSEED has a time-based acceptance process (we take
the first 50 with complete and verified applications), so I was not
surprised to see applications start arriving quickly. So far, eight
have come in and one is already complete. Lots of email questions too…

Two College Talks

15 March 2010: More on this topic is in the blog entry “Transitions for Young Adults with Neurocognitive Deficits

I gave two college talks last week – driving 372 miles south on Friday (San Jose – San Luis Obispo – San Jose), then 103 miles north on Saturday (San Jose – Lafayette – San Jose).

Friday’s talk was called “Mentoring in Engineering & Computer Science & Technology Jobs”, given at the sold-out  National Association of Engineering Student Councils (NAESC) conference at CalPoly in San Luis Obispo (SLO). For more, see my  1 April 2009 blog entry.

Saturday’s talk in Lafayette was called “What Happens After College? – Kids with Neurocognitive Disability Working in Engineering and Computing”, at the Orion Academy “3rd Annual Seminar on Post-Secondary Transition Planning for Young Adults with Aspergers, NLD and other Neurocognitive Deficits”. For more, see my 30 March 2009 blog entry.

From the comments and emails, I think both talks went well.  Some photos follow. You can also read Wendy Dow’s “University Recruiting Topics Studentzone” blog entry (13 April 2009) about the CalPoly talk [no longer available online].

Mentoring in Engineering & Computer Science & Technology Jobs

I am giving two industry workshops called “Mentoring in Engineering & Computer Science & Technology Jobs” this Friday at the  National Association of Engineering Student Councils (NAESC) conference in San Luis Obispo (SLO). The sold-out NAESC conference is sponsored by Sun (among others) and hosted by the California Polytechnic State University (“CalPoly”). The material I will talk about includes:

  • Mentoring
    • What do Mentors do?
    • Benefits of Mentoring
    • Formal versus Informal Mentoring
    • How to Find a Mentor?
    • How to Make Mentoring Work Better
    • Getting a Job
      • Finding an Engineering or CS Job – What Counts?
      • Ways to Get Experience Before Getting a Job

The “Getting a Job” section includes some of the same material I developed for the Orion Academy talk I am giving this Saturday (see my 30 March 2009 blog for more). I took the material on the “Formal versus Informal Mentoring” page from my 12 February 2009 blog on that topic. The “Benefits of Mentoring” slide was inspired by a presentation given last year by a great and long-time SEED mentor Mary Artibee:

    • Benefits of Mentoring
    • For the Mentee
      • Working with a master of your craft: learn faster,
        learn what matters
      • Borrow mentor’s network, increased connections
      • Start building your professional reputation
      • Earn mentor’s good recommendation
      • Gain a broader scope, wider perspective, inspiration
      • For the Mentor
        • A new and direct source: ideas, information, energy
        • Paying back, helping as they were helped
        • Gain a broader scope, wider perspective, inspiration

My NAESC talk is available for your review even if you are not going to the conference in SLO. Much of the mentoring information in this presentation
was developed as part of the  SEED Engineering worldwide mentoring program.

We started the mentor matching cycle on 11 March for the new
      SEED worldwide Engineering
Established Staff term. In the first twelve days of this cycle, we
have matched half of the participants (23 out of 47). All participants
will be matched, most within the next few weeks. The SEED program will
re-match any mentee whose mentor leaves Sun within three months of their match.

      Metrics

The 23 newly matched mentors include Distinguished Engineers, Directors, Vice
Presidents, and senior Engineering staff members. The geographical

      Next Terms

SEED runs seven terms a year. The next
terms will be for PreSEED and GSS SEED. Applications for PreSEED and GSS SEED
will be accepted starting at the end of March 2009 – the terms will run June-December 2009.
Those terms will be followed by an Established Staff term plus the year-long term
for Recent Hires (applications in June, terms to start in September 2009).
