A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian

I just finished reading A Short History of Tractors in
Ukrainian
(by Marina Lewycka, 2005) last night. If is a very
well written, entertaining,
and thought-provoking novel about two Ukrainian sisters in England
dealing with their 80+ year old father falling in love with a
30-something tramp from the old country. Along the way, it covers
some Stalinist-era history, difficulties in managing your aged
parent with respect, communism and consumerism and yes, a short
history of tractors.

Check it out!

Yes, it is a great book. However, the Ukrainian woman doesn’t come of as a “tramp”: the author shows sympathy for her at various points (and makes clear that the old man is pretty exploitative himself). It is surprisingly balanced, not purely about a “gold digger” and not purely about a “dirty old man”. A bit of both, but somewhere in the middle.
